WXAC Receives Grant for New Equipment

VIA Albright.edu

Reading, Pa. – Albright College’s student-run radio station, WXAC 91.3 FM, has received a $5,000 grant from the Pennsylvania Association of Broadcasters (PAB) to help fund equipment for a new studio in the former College Relations building at 13thand Richmond streets. WXAC is expected to move there in the coming weeks.

The new equipment system will cost approximately $15,000, and the grant will help cover a large portion of a Mac Pro computer, the keystone of a three-computer setup. WXAC, through underwriting and Albright’s Student Government, will provide the remainder of the funding.

Discussions are underway for Berks Community Television (BCTV) to join WXAC at 13th and Richmond. The facility would be known as the Berks Community Media Center at Albright College. The partnership would reflect the organizations’ shared commitment and mission to serve the Greater Reading community. It would also strengthen the College’s already robust experiential learning initiatives, with students in the Communications, Digital Communications and Digital Video Arts programs benefiting enormously from having these media outlets share space.

WXAC has been located in the basement of the Library/Administration building for the past 15 years. The move presents an ideal opportunity to modernize the studio equipment.

Celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2015, the nonprofit WXAC helps train students in broadcasting operations and fosters communication and life skills. WXAC also presents an alternative to commercial radio by acting as a forum for music, poetry and the arts. The station disseminates information relevant to and important for the Albright community and beyond, and provides Reading’s Latino community with a non-biased, non-commercial Spanish-language platform.

PAB is the oldest of the state broadcast associations. It provides services to stations throughout the state and WXAC is one of 220 radio stations enrolled with PAB.

Reading, Pa. – Berks Community Television (BCTV) is in discussions with Albright College to relocate to leased space on the College’s campus, the two sides confirmed today.

Plans call for BCTV to move from its current location in downtown Reading to a retrofitted building on Albright’s campus, in the former College Relations building at 13th and Richmond streets. Joining BCTV would be WXAC-FM (91.3), the College’s radio station. The facility would be known as the Berks Community Media Center at Albright College.

The two sides hope to conclude talks within a month, with a targeted move date by the end of the summer, according to BCTV Executive Director Ann Sheehan.

“All of us at BCTV are tremendously excited about this move,” Sheehan said. “The space itself as well as the opportunities for collaboration with Albright faculty and students make this the right thing to do at the right time for us.”

The partnership would reflect the organizations’ shared commitment and mission to serve the Greater Reading community. BCTV provides a medium for community dialogue and educational opportunities, as well as a forum for the exchange of ideas on issues and topics of community interest, while student-run WXAC provides the only Spanish-language mass media in Reading.

College officials expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, noting the potential for synergies among the cable channel, the radio station and numerous communications programs.

“Welcoming BCTV to campus and combining it with WXAC in the same facility will strengthen the College’s already robust experiential learning initiatives,” said Provost Andrea Chapdelaine, Ph.D. “Students in our Communications, Digital Communications, and Digital Video Arts programs will benefit enormously from having these media outlets located in the same space.”
